Guitar/Amp vs Guitar/Effects into Amp

Tagged As: Guitar Effects Tip

Question:
Anybody? I can't help but notice that when I run my guitar strait into my amp I get awsome tone. Plenty of harmonics and sustain. This is a good thing and I don't have any complaints. However, one tends to need some effects in order to compliment one's playing so therefore I have several BOSS units that I use. Now, heres the thing. When I run my guitar into the COMPRESSOR, CHOURUS, DELAY, and a tuner, then into my amp, something happens. I know that this is probably no surprise to any of you but the tone gets sucked right out. I lose some harmonics and punch/sustain and I think it tends to get muffled a bit too. I use one of those BOSS adapters that drive all three pedals plus the tuner. Could this have something to do with the drainage? Someone suggested trying batteries instead of the adapter. Are there any other things that I could try? Any tips?

Answer:
I'd try different combinations of the pedals to see if I could figure out if it was only one or two of the pedals that are doing the tone suck thing. You might find. for example, that the delay unit is the culprit. Maybe just replacing that pedal with a less obtrusive delay would fix the problem. If you have an effects loop in your amp you might try moving the chourus and delay units to that place in the chain. I've gotten the best use out of these and other modulation effects by inserting them after the preamp. Another thing I'd check is the compressor settings. I think it is possible that the harmonics you like might be being squeezed right out of the signal if the settings are too constrictive.
