Absolute Best Acoustic Guitar?

Tagged As:

Question:
What is the best acoustic guitar you've ever played?  I've played a lot of nice Martins and Gibson’s, but I'd have to give the prize to my friend's Alvarez-Yairi Woodridge Classic.  Best sound, playability and looks (beautiful cherry back and sides).

Answer:
Wow, what a can of worms this is going to open. Well, to really throw things off in a nice direction, you need to play my Taylor 810.  It is now 8 years old and sounds killer.  There is a classic shape to that guitar, the rosewood is beautiful and it plays like a dream with .013 to .056 on it. Larivee wins that category hands down.  They also make great basses.  I play a Larivee bass on my bands new CD.  Check it out http://www.mp3.com/TzarZaltan Graf Concert model. The best guitar I have ever played, hands down. Nothing else is close and I have played a lot of acoustics from vintage Martins to new whatevers. They are expensive (probably close to 3000 US) and I unfortunately don't own one but my best friend does (20 year old model). Graf's webpage is: http://web.ctsolutions.com/grafguitars/ My next favorite is my own guitar which is also a handmade, by Marc Beneteau. http://www.execulink.com/~beneteau/ No big company can beat the work of a good luthier. Those of you who play similar guitars know what I mean. Lot of good ones out there but I love my Martin HD 28V! My Alvarez Yari Jumbo is nice, but it doesn't compare. That changes every time you pick up a new guitar, but ... One of the local stores had a Huss & Dalton on consignment for a while. They've also currently got a couple of nice C Fox's, and a 64 Martin 20-12 that's probably the nicest 12 string acoustic I've had my hands on in quite a while. The nicest acoustic I ever played was handmade by a fellow in Toronto, Ontario Canada named G.W Barry. He makes such an amazing instrument, amazing tone and playability. They are available at 12th fret guitar shop in Toronto. There website is www.12fret.com Martin OM-28V...so I bought it... My 1996 Taylor 614-C. No electronics on board. My old Yairi GY-1 that I sold to a friend who tours with a country artist. That Garcia model was sweet. I have to second on the Taylor 810. I played an older one that had really good tone. All w/.12-.56 I am sure Larivees and Taylors and Yairis and such are very nice. LoPrinzi Made a real nice instrument. My 1973 D35 never leaves me wanting . Martin all the way. Why, the best acoustic guitar is the one I'm holding now. Hardly an objective opinion. Yes the LoPrinzi was a little nicer than a Martin, Anyone ever play a Mossman ?

Thanks for a great website. I've had a long love affair with fine acoustic instruments spanning from Vintage Martins, Collings, Breedloves, Olsons, Ryans... I have to say that one of the absolute best acoustic guitars I have recently discovered a new love which makes my other guitars green with envy. I've discovered McPherson and I must say it wasn't something I was initially attracted to. The offset sound hole design was un-traditional and I refused to even give them a second look. I've seen the ads running for years in Acoustic Guitar Magazine for years but never was able to play them since they're about as illusive as a bottle of 1868 Chateau Latour. My initial thought upon finally playing the guitar on a sheer critical whim was that it was heavy but the more I played it I realized it was not overbuilt and it had something special. The distinctive separation and clarity of each note, the balance, playability, sustain all memorized me drew me in. I was trying hard to hate this guitar out of a precipice against anything unorthodox to the world of fine acoustic lutherie. After owning many guitars in your mind you pick out the distinct characteristics you love about every guitar you have only to wish all could be found embodied in a single guitar. A feat which I believed belonged only to mythical trolls and the end of taxes forever. McPherson was an unsuspected surprise and has grown into a new love which grows stronger with every moment I spend with it.
