Disassembling an old plywood classical acoustic guitar

Tagged As:

Question:
Thought it might be a fun project, during the summer holidays, for my daughter and I to disassemble/reassemble an old plywood classical acoustic guitar I have kicking around. First off, I would like to do a bit of reading on disassembling methods before we actually do any hands on....any suggestions for web sites that detail such procedures would be much appreciated.

Answer:
I don't think anyone wants to be a downer in responding to your post but if that plywood classical is epoxied together like 99% are, you are looking at a nightmare to disassemble. I doubt you will find web sites that would broach this subject since no plywood classical is worth a major repair which would require separating an epoxied seam. Applying heat would be required to soften the epoxy which could possibly combust or at the least emit toxic fumes. Now that is something I didn't realize and is a very useful piece of information.  I'm thinking of taking the soundboard binding off first...any way of testing to see what attachment method they used? Another alternative is to consider replacing the top altogether with a solid wood one. Then you have yourself lined out for the same type of job as with an Ovation. Break out the dremell and route around the top inside the binding and purfling and remove the top. This is actually best done using templates so that you can use the template both for routing and as a template for making the new top. Just a thought.
