Question:
I have a Dauphin Model #12 CG that I bought 15 years ago for about $400. It has served me very well. I want to keep the guitar and save it for my 6 year old son. However, I noticed that the bridge on my guitar has started to separate from the top and I'm afraid to play it. I'd really like to repair my guitar - it plays beautifully. As a reference, I tried the ESTEVE GR08 and they are comparable in volume and tone. How difficult is it to repair the bridge? I am willing to do the repairs myself but I don't know what to do - what type of glue or clamps? About how much would a luthier charge to repair the bridge?
Answer:
Same thing happened to my guitar. Years of super high tension strings seemed to have been too stressful. I had it repaired by a luthier and from his description of the job it doesn't sound like something someone of little repair experience should undertake. He completely removed the bridge from the soundboard (that part in itself sounds pretty tricky) and because of the degree of the bend in it he recommended a new bridge. He said he could have straightened the old one but wood tends to have memory and it might have re-bent. To make a long story short, my guitar is fixed and sounding great. (It was also a good opportunity to have my soundboard refinished , so the guitar looks great as well!)
