To re-cone or not to recone??

Tagged As:

Question:

I finally received my 'funkoid' Airline guitar w/amp-in-the-case. It appears to be a safe amp (has choke and transformer vs. transformerless electrocutor type). Question is: Is this a dandy, worth the cost to have it restored? How much does it usually cost, and can anyone suggest any outfits -- preferably in the midwest (less shipping)

Answer:

Guitar Emporium, Louisville, KY is highly recommended. It is used by the best amp guy in Indianapolis, even though there are some good local companies that can do the work. The guy there does very good work at reasonable prices. 502-459-4153. Also, I think Weber does recones at www.webervst.com . Also, there is a guy in St. Louis that is supposedly quite good. I think he is listed on the weber page somewhere. It will likely cost slightly more to repair than a replacement speaker. I think good weber speakers are offered for somewhere around $20-30. I have not tried them yet but likely will. It depends if you want to keep the amp original or not (or as close as possible, since a re-cone isn't quite original, but as close as you can get). You could also look for a used 8 replacement of the same type. They are sometimes available at coldsprings (they have an ad in vintage guitar magazine) and on auction on ebay. Also, you may luck out and find a good speaker in a dead amp - they are not uncommon. I also have an extra replacement (not a jensen) that will work if you are interested for cheap or trade (I think it is a CTS). I had two but used one to repair a silvertone with good results.
