Question:
I miss the refretting Jim D'Aquisto's did on my guitar as much as I miss him. After Jimmy died, to was time to have my guitar refretted again and I had to choose someone else to do it. Before he died, Jimmy was working less and less had suggested John Monteleone to do the job. I contacted John but the turn around time was at the time six months. I don't even think he does refrets anymore. He has his apprentice do them, and it's still at least a six month wait. I wpund up bringing my axe into Roger Sadowsky and am not happy with the way the guitar plays, feels and tunes. Does any body know of someone comparable to Jimmy who can refret guitars?
Answer:
Funny how we guitarists are. He's from stein music in Los angeles passed away and I swore up and down for about 7 years that no one would replace him. 7 years later, after I got over my repairman shyness, (and my guitar was in desperate need for a refret) I allowed myself to find someone else, for a simple job as a refret. Took me along time to trust someone else just to do the job. I guess as soon as we put things into prespective then things get done. Believe me, it took a little self education to understand that which I expected from a fret let alone what I expected from a repairman. After that, I just prescribe the things I need done to my guitar and I've found a competant repair person (as I'm sure there are alot out there to choose from). Repairing a guitar is Brain surgery. Alot of players in the New York area with complaints similiar to yours have started taking their guitars instead to The Guitar Specialist. Word has it that they are extremely satisfied with the work being done there. There are only two luthiers there who do all the work (no apprentices or shophands) and the turn-around time is much shorter. They currently do all repairs for John Abercrombie and Joe Beck and have recently picked up John Scofield as a client. You might want to check them out - www.guitarspecialist.com
