Lap Dulcimer repair?

Question:

Anyone know of a place that does repair on a LAP DULCIMER near north west NJ?

Answer:

Any competent guitar repairman can work on a mountain dulcimer (or, as you choose to call it, a lap dulcimer. ) All fretted instruments have basic similarities that allow a repair tech to do the necessary work on any of them. If you can get over to Staten Island there are two places I can recommend, both very highly. Both ought to be in the Staten Island phone book. First is a man named Flip Scipio. I guess he's originally from the Netherlands - I've never met him, but have heard great things about his instrument repair work, even all the way up here in Alaska where I now live. Then other place I'd recommend is the store where Flip used to work, Mandolin Brothers. Again, they're extremely experienced with working on all sorts of instruments, and do in fact carry mountain dulcimers in the store. So they should be able to help you with no problem at all. Now I appreciate that the folks who steered you to the guitar manufacturers' websites were trying to give you the best advice they could think of. But dulcimer repair is not exactly what you might call a string manufacturer's line of country - whoever's likely to be looking at the e-mail off their website would probably not even be a musician at all. Even if they are, you'd almost certainly do better to call Flip Scipio first and then Mando Bros. Flip is a nice enough guy that if you didn't want to drive all the way into Staten Island he might know of a repair shop closer to your home. Just from what everyone has told me about the guy, I'd bet he be gracious enough to pass that information along. To be honest with you. There are a lot of decisions you are going to have to make for your son. We had to call off a number of test that we as Dylans parents thought were going over board. Remember, these doctors don't know your son as well as you do. Some of their testing may seem like it is TOO MUCH, but they are just trying to be very thorough. They may even tell you that his sinuses have not fully developed yet therefore the breathing may still be noisy. That was the case with our daughter.
