Question:
I went to a guitar school back in 1978 at Charles Fox house. I was wondering if anyone else in this chat line has been to the same shool, and if they stayed with guitar building.I have done repair work for friends but that is all I've done, except for making 2 banjos with wood tops instead of drum skins. They came out looking good but the sound is about half of a normal banjo. Has anyone else tried this???
Answer:
I also attended GRD I attended in 1980 I have been repairing guitars since and have done some custom building (electrics).I've done repairs for a couple of local stores but the majority of the work has been done in my basement shop. I do this as a part time business. Charles is in California now running a school for guitar building associated with Luthiers mercantile There's a 15-year-old who comes to our Saturday night jam sessions. He has just finished building a banjo with a wooden top in his high school wood shop. He did a great job - it looks good and it sounds good, too. It's not as loud as a good-quality skinhead banjo, but it's louder than most guitars. The tone is somewhere between a dulcimer and a banjo with a mute. Naturally, it has more sustain than a regular banjo. All the guitar players feel that a low-volume banjo is a good thing.
