Question:
Has anyone tried the Guitar Scales Method? Care to share your thoughts on the software?
Answer:
I bought it 3 years ago, and I know it well. I am constantly seeking out and trying music software and I feel that this is an excellent value. I've played flamenco guitar for about 6 years now with no previous music experience before 1998. I learned a few scattered scale patterns in a very physical way, not really knowing what was going on. After trying many times to get disciplined, and failing, I tried this GSM software. I'm no pro or anything, but I know all the major scale(and mode) patterns in any key. The pentatonic scale as well. I bought the fretboard software by the same company and learned my fretboard inside and out...........which helped tremendously. The Drills Progress Map is what got me over the hump. I could leave it and come back 2 weeks later and know where I need to improve. I've mastered(dark green) the first three layers at this point. If you do it like he recommends, really honestly mastering it before moving on, the Map will benefit you greatly. I use the other features regularly as well. Most of my time in GSM is now spent with the Play-Along Trainer. After you get the first three levels of the Map mastered, start using that and you'll make a ton of connections and realizations. I feel like you have to apply as you go or it's all theory and dexterity exercises. So, I'll progress through the rest of the Map while using the play-along trainer to test out what I've just learned. The pattern trainer is very useful, but it's purely for dexterity and accuracy. It's important to pay attention to scale degrees becuase you WILL use them in later Map levels. I've written the support guy(team?) at GSM many times and have always recieved a personal response in a short amount of time. One of them even sent me a file to upload to the play-along trainer to demonstrate the answer to my question. In the end, this has given me 100's of ours of quality education for $50. My guitar looks differently to me now and I'm wondering why more people aren't trying this.
