increased sustain with higher string tension?

Tagged As:

Question:

I was re-stringing my 1998 Gibson Les Paul the other day. I accidentally overwound the new strings (i.e. the string tension made the notes a few steps higher in pitch). It seemed to me, though, that when the strings were at a higher tension, the guitar had more sustain (acoustically). Maybe I was mistaken, having played with pretty old, shot strings for a while. But is it possible that higher tunings could yield increased sustain? If so, my main concern is that my guitar is set up improperly. At times I think my Les Paul isn't giving the sustain in should.
